Botox dermatology clinics compared by area
'Botox' is the everyday name for injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin to temporarily weaken specific muscles. It works by blocking the release of the chemical signal that nerves send to muscles, and is mainly used to soften expression lines between the brows, on the forehead and around the eyes, or to slim a well-developed jaw muscle (masseter). It is also used to reduce sweating.
Effects are generally described as starting within a few days, becoming clear at around two weeks, and fading gradually over several months. How long they last varies widely by area, dose and muscle size. Deep wrinkles visible at rest and sagging skin have causes other than muscle movement, so Botox alone has limits there.
Checklist for choosing a clinic for Botox
- Explanation of dose by area Each area, such as between the brows, the forehead, around the eyes or the jaw, needs a different dose (in units). When you consult a clinic in your area, ask how much goes into which muscle, and get it in writing after the procedure; it makes comparing next time easier.
- Product, opening and dilution Several botulinum toxin products are approved, and their composition and storage and dilution methods differ slightly. On the day of your procedure in your area, asking which product is used and whether they can show you the opening and dilution helps you verify what you're receiving.
- Interval since your last session Frequent injections at short intervals, or extra shots right away because the effect seems weak, are often mentioned alongside resistance concerns. Advice to wait about three months or more is common, so if you're going again in your area, start by giving the date of your last session.
- Criteria for touch-up injections Effects settle at around two weeks, so results are hard to judge before then. Before your procedure in your area, confirm when you'll be seen if there's left-right asymmetry or remaining lines, and the criteria and cost for any touch-up; it avoids confusion later.
- Health status and medications The procedure is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with neuromuscular conditions that weaken muscles. Some drugs, such as certain antibiotics, also affect signaling between nerves and muscles, so it's safer to list every medication and condition when filling out the questionnaire in your area.
Warning signs to watch for
- Drooping eyelids or brows If your eyelids feel heavy and droop or your brow position changes after forehead or brow injections, the drug may have spread to nearby muscles. It usually recovers over time, but tell the clinic in your area that treated you right away so they can monitor it.
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing Rarely, the drug's effect can spread beyond the injection site and make speaking, swallowing or breathing difficult. Don't wait with these symptoms; get emergency care immediately, and also inform the clinic in your area that treated you.
- Discount ads that don't mention dose Ads that highlight only the price without stating the dose, product or treatment area give you nothing to compare. If you visited a clinic in your area after seeing such an ad, confirm again before the procedure how many units go into which area.
- Effects that keep getting shorter If the same dose in the same area produces noticeably weaker effects or almost none, resistance is one possibility to consider. Before continuing treatment in your area, it's wise to review your record of intervals and doses so far.

Frequently asked questions
Are Botox and botulinum toxin the same thing?
When referring to the procedure, they're used almost interchangeably. Botulinum toxin is the drug's name, and 'Botox' became the everyday term for injecting it. When consulting in your area, ask which product is actually used rather than the procedure name.
When do effects appear, and how long do they last?
Effects generally start within days, become clear around two weeks and fade over months. Wrinkle areas often last about 3–4 months and jaw muscles longer, varying widely by person. If treated in your area, check the mirror at two weeks.
Can frequent injections cause resistance?
The risk is low but can't be ruled out. Effects can weaken if the body makes antibodies; short-interval repeat injections and high doses are cited as factors. If planning regular sessions in your area, space them out and keep records.
Will square-jaw Botox weaken my chewing?
Some people temporarily feel they chew with less force. It weakens the masseter to shrink it, so hard foods can tire the jaw, though most adapt within weeks. Mention teeth grinding or jaw joint symptoms when consulting in your area.
Is there anything to avoid on the day of the procedure?
Avoid rubbing or pressing hard on the injection sites. To limit spread to unintended muscles, the usual advice is to skip massages, saunas and strenuous exercise that day. If you go after work in your area, check your evening plans.
Final notes
Botox may look simple, but results and the risk of side effects vary with the dose for each area, the product and the interval between sessions. When choosing a clinic in your area, look first at how specific the explanation is and whether they give you a record of the procedure, rather than at the price. If you have a medical condition or take medication, discuss it with the doctor before the procedure.
